How to Reverse Chronic Inflammation: 8 Helpful Tips

Inflammation is your body’s natural response to healing an injury or illness. So while inflammation is not always bad, chronic inflammation is definitely not good!

Modern life leaves many chronically inflamed due to poor diet, stress, toxin exposure, and more. When this inflammation goes on too long, the body begins to wear down.

This might start as nagging fatigue, brain fog, or chronic pain. But over time, it can lead to more severe problems.

That’s why it’s crucial to address chronic inflammation day-to-day before things get too out of hand. So let’s explore what causes chronic inflammation and how to reverse it.

Signs of Chronic Inflammation

Chronic inflammation is at the root of many modern illnesses, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, allergies, asthma, and arthritis. (1) Yet, well before disease sets in, your body sends signals that inflammation is simmering.

Chronic inflammation is behind:

  • Moodiness

  • Headaches

  • Chronic joint and muscle pain

  • Brain fog

  • Weight loss resistance

  • Food sensitivities

  • And more…

What Causes Chronic Inflammation?

Chronic inflammation has many root causes, including:

  • Blood sugar imbalance

  • Gut infections and gut inflammation

  • Toxins such as mycotoxins, heavy metals, food additives, pesticides, etc.

  • Hormone imbalances such as high cortisol and estrogen dominance

  • Overexercise

  • Poor sleep

To combat chronic inflammation, you will need to address ALL of the above (as needed). Watch the video for a deeper dive.

How to Reverse Chronic Inflammation

#1 - Balance Your Blood Sugar

Blood sugar regulation is key to taming inflammation. Get your carbs in early, and tone them down later in the day. Alcohol can cause a major blood sugar spike, so limit that evening wine. Also, consider investing in a blood sugar monitor. Here is the one I use.

#2 - Address Gut Infections & Inflammation

Processed foods are packed with harmful chemicals and sugars, which damage your gut. So ditch the processed foods and eat whole foods instead. We have plenty of delicious healthy recipes if you need some inspiration!

Gut infections are a major source of inflammation too. So, if you suffer from chronic gut issues like constipation, bloating, and gas, consider testing.

You don’t want to guess when it comes to your gut! Our GI-Map test gives you a comprehensive view of the current state of your gut.

#3 - Reduce Toxin Exposure

Nowadays, toxins are everywhere! And while you can’t avoid them altogether, you CAN scale back exposure. Here are a few ways:

  • Drink only filtered water

  • Use an air filter

  • Store food in glass containers

  • Switch to natural cleaners (or make your own!)

  • Choose natural personal care products (check the EWG website for some good options)

  • Take a binder to help mop up the toxins you encounter each day

Practicing daily detox techniques like castor oil packs, coffee enemas, rebounding, and dry brushing can also help lessen your toxin load.

Ever wonder how full your toxin bucket is? Our Total Tox-Burden + PFAS Chemicals panel combines the Environmental Toxins, Mycotoxins, Heavy Metals, and PFAS Chemicals tests to measure your exposure to a variety of toxins.

#4 - Get Out of a Moldy Home

Living in a moldy environment exposes you to an onslaught of inflammation from mycotoxins. You simply can’t get better if you’re living in a moldy home. Even if you don’t have severe symptoms yet, you can get quite sick when it’s not addressed.

But leaving a moldy environment is overwhelming. Trust me – I get it! If you need guidance my book, The Ultimate Toxic Mold Recovery Guide walks you through everything step-by-step.

# 5 - Exercise…But Not Too Much

Exercise regularly – just don’t overdo it. Physical activity has anti-inflammatory effects on the body. (2) But when you exercise too intensely, it can increase inflammation. (3) So start with gentle activities like walking and yoga and add in more things as your body feels ready.

# 6 -Get Plenty of Sleep

Not getting enough sleep increases inflammatory markers in the body. (4) So if you’re not getting enough quality shut-eye, it’s time to change that. Get to bed early and create a winding down ritual to help you slide into sleep. You can meditate, take an Epsom salt bath, or do some journaling.

Also, try getting sun exposure each day to support your body’s circadian rhythm. And get nutritional sleep support if needed. Magnesium, melatonin, or Ashwagandha are all excellent options.

# 7 - Antioxidants

Antioxidants protect your body from free radical damage that can trigger inflammation. So, if you want to dial down inflammation, turn up the antioxidants! You can do this by eating plenty of colorful fruits and vegetables, using more spices, and drinking green tea.

Antioxidant supplements can also be a gamechanger for lowering inflammation. Here are my faves:

#8 - Balance Your Hormones
