Winter Solstice- Harness Its Power
I have really been feeling the depth and beauty of this time of year. Even here in Phoenix, where our winters are mild, it is still DARK, and the nights are chilly.
Winter starts on the solstice, Dec. 21, the darkest day, but also the eve of the days getting longer again.
Here are three suggestions to maximize the benefits of this season.
Rest and Check Out
For the body to really restore, resist the urge to be constantly productive. To find restore creativity, we need space. So allow these things:
Take naps
Go to bed early
Sit by the fire
Make tea
Daydream
Journal
Read
Do creative projects
Play board games
Take slow walks in nature
Cook
Snuggle
Our phones train us to constantly scroll them. But you are its boss and your brain and future will benefit from putting it away.
2. Detox, Detox, Detox
People think of the spring as the time to detox (probably for swimwear weather!), but winter is a good time too. This is a time of letting go and simplifying.
Avoid the cold, raw foods you may associate with detox, and instead think of healthy stews, roasted veggies and herbal teas. It’s great to sauna (often!) and gently move with yoga.
Also give extra love to your immune system and respiratory system in the winter. Silver spray for the nose and mullein tea for the lungs are two options. I also love astragalus and of course include vitamin D.
3. Set It And Forget It
This is the time to record what you want to experience as the days get longer. Write it down. What do you want more of? Or less of? Then tuck it away in a journal.
Revisit your list from time to time. Are you moving towards it in little ways?
Summary
This time of year is powerful. As the earth is gelling its resources for the spring blooms, so you can gather your intention, and clear your vessel so you are ready!
