How Mold Affects Your Body

Wondering if toxic mold may be to blame for your chronic health issues? It’s more common than you’d think! Around 50% of buildings in the US have a history of water damage. (1) If you feel like you’ve tried everything, but are still struggling with random symptoms, mold may be to blame.

Symptoms of Mold Toxicity

Toxic mold disrupts all bodily systems, which is why symptoms are all over the map, including:

  • Asthma

  • Sinus congestion

  • Headaches

  • Foggy thinking

  • Memory problems

  • Weight gain

  • Muscle twitching

  • Insomnia

  • Skin rashes

  • Fatigue

  • Attention-deficit

  • Chronic digestive issues

  • Irregular periods

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

With such a diverse range of symptoms, it’s easy to see how tricky diagnosis can be! It’s common for people dealing with toxic mold to shuffle from doctor to doctor for years before discovering the root of their health woes.

So how does mold cause such mayhem in your body?

How Toxic Mold Harms Your Body

For starters, not all mold is toxic. However, indoor ‘artificial’ environments create the perfect conditions for toxic mold to dominate.

If you’re living in a moldy environment, you’re chronically exposed to mold’s harmful biotoxins, including spores, cell fragments, endotoxins, beta-glucans, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and mycotoxins.

Over time, these mold toxins build up and cause a state of chronic inflammation. This can lead to a condition coined ‘CIRS,’ Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome by Dr. Richie Shoemaker, a pioneer in biotoxin research. (2)

Plus, if you’re one of the unlucky 25% with the HLA-DR gene, toxic mold will hit you especially hard. This gene hinders your liver’s ability to tag and clear biotoxins. This causes mycotoxins to keep recirculating, wreaking havoc in the process. (3)

This is bad news, as research shows chronic inflammation may be the root of numerous illnesses, including asthma, arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, and more! (4)

That’s why if you suspect mold is to blame, it’s critical you take action. The sooner you remove yourself from the moldy environment, the sooner you’ll feel relief.
